Diabetes in Brazil
Brazil is a developing country that presents several problems related to Public Health. Out of estimated 12 millions of diabetic patients, a half doesn’t know the diagnosis. The right to the Diabetes treatment on its total, although supported by present federal law, is not still reality to the most part of patients who are dependent of some oral agents (Metformin and Glyburide) and insulins (NPH and regular). Only 10% of diabetic patients are insulin users. The supply of insulin analogs is a point of debate in the scientific field and the distribution of blood glucose strips is still irregular.
In recent research, holding glycated hemoglobin measurement (HbA1c) in 6700 patients from 10 national capitals, being 15% type 1 diabetic patients (T1D), it was detected that 75% of all patients aren’t controlled (HbA1c > 7,0%). These numbers set Brazil in second world step in the prevalence of inadequate glycemic control, just behind of Tunisia where 83% are bad controlled. When the subgroup of T1D is analyzed in the Brazilian research, this index increases to 90%.
